    Greetings in English

In English there are many forms of greeting, some formal and some informal. Greeting is an elementary form of politeness in human society. It is a simple way to show respect and friendship.

Formal greetings:

These greetings are used in situations or spaces that require a slightly more serious and formal attitude.




Informal greetings

The greetings in this list are a bit more informal. They are also used in many social situations, from meeting friends to greeting colleagues at work.



Very informal greetings

The greetings in the following list are very informal. Some of them, depending on how you get along with your interlocutor or your age, may be a bit of a joke, so use them with discretion.
